The curriculum at Bannockburn is chosen by the faculty and administration for challenging and enriching content. The learning environment is customized specifically for students attending Bannockburn School. All subjects are taught with a Christian perspective. Bannockburn students are well prepared to transition into Hyde Park Junior High and Senior High Schools.
Parental involvement is extremely important for the success of students as well as our academic endeavors. Parents that make the effort to know what is expected are better able to encourage and support their children.
READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS: We use the Houghton Mifflin reading series because it includes an exposure to a variety of literary styles, as well as comprehension and vocabulary skills including critical thinking activities. We are interspersing novels into our curriculum in first throught sixth grades. The novels enable students, as a class, to enjoy another depth of discussion. Writing informative and easily understood sentences are practiced in all subjects. We emphasize correct letter formation and practice handwriting daily. Spelling is provided in a Christian study series, as well as integration from other classes. We work with the Abeka and Shurley Language Series. Students in first through sixth grades participate in the Private Schools Interscholastic Association (PSIA Language Arts competitions.
MATH: The elementary grades use the A Beka Arithmetic Series. This spiral program reviews daily skills along with new concepts. We seek to improve computation, problem solving, along with real-life applications. We also implement higher level thinking skills. Students in fourth through sixth grades participate in the PSIA math competitions.
BIBLE: Bible is taught daily in every grade. The Bible curriculum includes grade and age appropriate objectives, references and are integrated into other content areas. Bible verses in weekly Chapels offer children opportunities to locate verses, use references, and develop an overall respect for The Word. We emphasize strong Character Building opportunities that focus on compassion, responsibility, cooperation, perseverance, respect, integrity, initiative, forgiveness and others.
SCIENCE: Our science curriculum is published by Scott Foresman. Teachers extend the curriculum to include students' interests. We offer opportunities to use the science process in planning and presenting lab studies. Parents offer a valuable resource in many of our presentations. Our beautiful grounds are a built in lab in our own back yard.
Each grade enphasizes healthy choices as well as awareness and prevention of substance abuse as tools for productive lifestyles. Christian values are promoted school wide. Upper grades, with parental permission, view Christian human developmental films. Parents are offered the opportunity to view the films prior to viewing.
SOCIAL STUDIES; Our Social Studies curriculum uses McGraw Hill textbooks as a well-defined study. Each grade focuses on a different aspect of our community; Texas, American History, and World History. Geography, charts and graphs are integrated into many of our studies. Skills learned in class promote a Christian Worldview which is so vital in our global society.
