| HYDE PARK ELEMENTARY: Extracurricular |
|
In order to provide a well-rounded educational experience for our students, the after-school activities detailed below are available. All of these activities are either taught or led by a Hyde Park Elementary faculty member, with the exception of Mad Science. There are fees for some of these activities.
Athletics (5th - 6th)
Boys and girls in 5th and 6th grades are eligible to participate in after-school sports through the Austin Inter-Parochial League (AIPL), an organization of private schools in the Austin area that join together to promote athletic competition. Practices and games are held after school or on Saturday mornings. Our two Physical Education teachers coordinate the teams and a group of parent coaches volunteer their time to work with the students. Students (teams or individuals) participate in post-season tournaments and we usually have a number of teams that receive trophies or other recognition through AIPL. The following sports are offered:
GIRLS
Volleyball, Basketball, Track, Golf, Coed Soccer, Tennis
BOYS
Flag Football, Basketball, Track, Golf, Coed Soccer, Tennis

Marathon Kids (K-5)
Sponsored by Run Tex, Marathon Kids is a running program for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade designed to encourage families to run more. The student has a goal of running 26.2 miles in five months. Keeping a running log, each student runs one-half to one mile at a time, at school or at home. The kick-off mile is held in September at Mike Myers Stadium at The University of Texas, and the final mile is at Burger Center in February. Children receive registration forms for this free program through their PE class at school. Over 20,000 students in the Austin Area participate in this program each year.
Mad Science (K-6th)
Mad Science is a hands-on interactive science class for students in grades K-6 that is offered at Hyde Park Elementary in two sessions, fall and spring. The program is designed to spark children's interest in science, and has included such topics as "Energy Burst," "Science and Art," "All About Animals," "Life in the Sea," and "Great Gravity." Mad Science teachers come to the school once a week for eight weeks each session to teach the hour-long class.
After School Art (K-6th)
Taught by our elementary EXCEL teacher, this after school class meets once a week for five week sessions. The students are given the opportunity to work with many different art mediums. Special seasonal and holiday projects as well as painting, drawing, clay, fuse beads and watercolor are enjoyed by the students.
King's Cast (4th- 6th)
Drama and theatre arts are creative disciplines that many of our students excel in. This once a week class (five week sessions) offers interested students opportunities to develop their skills and talents in this area. Taught by the elementary music teacher, Christian-based instruction in speech, drama and music is designed to develop skills and increase each student's self-esteem and confidence. King's Cast members frequently share their talents through skits, choral readings and musical drama presentations in weekly Chapel services.
Destination Imagination (5th-6th)
Formerly known as Odyssey of the Mind, the Destination Imagination School Program is an educational activity that fosters creative thinking and problem-solving skills among participating students from kindergarten through college. It features an annual competition component at local through international levels. Students solve problems in a variety of areas – from building mechanical devices such as spring-driven vehicles to giving their own interpretation of literary classics. Through the DI program, students learn to work with others as a team, evaluating ideas, making decisions and creating solutions while also developing self-confidence from their experiences. Our DI students frequently win local competitions and advance to the state level. Hyde Park Elementary usually has several teams each year that enter the competition in the spring. It requires many hours of problem solving and practice to prepare for contest. Under the direction of the EXCEL teacher, the teams are coached by parents who volunteer their time.
Texas Media Awards (K-6th)
Sponsored by the Texas Library Association, this annual contest encourages classes, individual students or groups of students to enter a media competition in the categories of Color Photography, Black and White Photography, Digital Photography, Video Production, Digital Music Composition, Multimedia Presentation, Visual Graphic Design, and Web Page Design. Winning students and groups are invited to the awards ceremony at the Texas Library Association convention in the spring.
PSIA Academic Competition (1st -8th)

Students compete in such academic areas as Spelling, Creative Writing, Math, Number Sense, Dictionary Skills, Listening Skills, Storytelling, Ready Writing, Prose Interpretation, and Maps, Graphs and Charts.
