Academic Profile for Hyde Park Junior/Senior High
The School Calendar/ Grade Reporting The school calendar is divided into two semesters, from the middle of August through the end of May, with vacations at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and in the spring. Report cards are issued every nine weeks in the Junior High (Grades 7th-8th) and High School (Grades 9th-12th). Progress reports are sent home to denote academic difficulty every three weeks. Report cards and progress reports are delivered electronically to parents through Edline.
Student/ Teacher Ratio Presently the overall student/ teacher ratio is 9 to 1 at Hyde Park Secondary Schools. At the secondary schools extra help is available from faculty before and after school, and teacher conferences are arranged as needed.
Student Recognition Each spring junior and senior high students are invited to a junior/senior high school awards ceremony. Students are recognized for achievement and outstanding achievement in all disciplines. Daily announcements include recognizing students who have won awards or competitions, who have demonstrated outstanding prowess in athletic events, students who have received music awards, and seniors who have been accepted to universities and/or received scholarships. Bulletin boards located in several key areas also recognize students' achievements and awards. The Panther Newsletter recognizes both team and individuals for their awards and service. Often special recognition is given at chapel and at pep rallies.
Spiritual Emphasis School begins each day with prayer in all grades. Bible is taught on a daily basis at every grade level, and weekly Bible verses are given for memorization. Christian values are integrated across disciplines. Students attend weekly Chapel services where they participate in group singing, listen to thought-provoking speakers, sing in grade level choirs, and/ or perform dramatic skits interpreting different scripture passages. Students also participate in service projects at various ministries in the Austin area.
Curriculum Development The professional faculty reevaluates each subject area as a part of our ongoing school improvement process. Additionally, kindergarten through twelfth grade Vertical Teams meet each summer to share ideas about curriculum revisions. Curriculum Maps for K-12 have been developed for the core subject areas of English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. This process assures that there are no gaps or overlaps in the K-12 curriculum. The curriculum places strong emphasis on academic skills at all levels. The ongoing curriculum development includes the TEKS as well as Hyde Park enrichment objectives.
Technology Students in junior and senior high take classes in keyboarding, computer applications, desktop publishing, web design and multi-media. In yearbook and journalism students use Photoshop and PageMaker. Students use PowerPoint in many classes for their presentations. Others use video presentations for their special project presentations. Computers are in every classroom for teachers' daily use for attendance and grading as well as for communication with parents and with each other. A computer lab is available for student use at various times, and computers are available in the library for students.
The Arts All grade levels provide different opportunities for students to express their artistic and musical talents. All students have many opportunities to perform in plays or at Chapel, in musicals, or in the orchestra program. Students also have the opportunity to use several different art mediums to create pieces of artwork that may be submitted to various contests.
Hyde Park Baptist Junior High The Junior High School builds on basic skills in language arts, mathematics, social studies and science and is designed to thoroughly prepare students for our high school’s college preparatory curriculum. Algebra I, Geometry, and Foreign Language A and B are given high school credit, but no high school grade points are assigned. Pre-college-level courses (Pre AP) are offered in math and English in 7th grade and are expanded to include history and science as well in 8th grade. Hyde Park Baptist High School To graduate from the High School and receive a recommended diploma, students must complete 26 units as follows: English 4, Social Studies 3, Economics ½, Government ½, Mathematics 4, Science 4, Foreign Language 3, Physical Education 1 ½, Fine Arts 1, Health ½, Communications Applications ½, Computer 1, Bible 2, and Elective ½ . A Diploma with Distinction requires 26 units and four advanced measures.
Among the specific High School courses are English I-IV, Bible I-IV, Latin I-III, Spanish I-V, French I-IV, World History, American Government & Economics, American History, World Geography, Computer Applications, Desktop Publishing, Web Design, Multi-Media, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus and Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Aquatic Science and Environmental Science, Creative Writing, Yearbook, Speech, Communications Applications, Journalism, Dance, Drama, Art I-III, Choir, Orchestra, Guitar, Keyboard Lab/Music Theory, and Physical Education. Advanced Placement courses are offered in English III-IV, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, Economics, Government, Biology, Chemistry, French IV, Spanish IV, Spanish V, Latin IV, U. S. History, Physics B, and Physics C.
