EVENTS CALENDAR FRIENDS OF FINE ARTS
Hyde Park’s Fine Arts program is well known both throughout Austin and beyond. The High School fall play and spring musical rival those of other outstanding high schools in the state. Hyde Park had 3 students selected for the 2009 Texas All-State Choir. One middle school student was selected for the Texas Choral Director’s Association Middle School State Honor Choir. Our dance teams consistently bring home top honors from competition. We would love to see you at one of our events during the 2009-2010 school year. Some events do have a fee for attendance and reserved seating may be available. Click here for the current schedule.
CHOIR
Karla Cruz
Karla Cruz has been directing middle school and high school choirs in Texas for seventeen years, and is currently the high school choir director at Hyde Park Baptist Schools. Her choirs have received consistent sweepstakes awards at UIL competition and have won best of class at festivals in Breckenridge, Colorado; Los Angeles, California; Padre Island, Texas; and Toronto, Canada. In Canada, her choir was awarded the prestigious “Esprit de Corps” award. In 1999, her choir was selected as an honor choir to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association convention. Several composers have written choral pieces dedicated to choirs under her direction, including Richard Gabrillo, Mark Cruz, Joseph Martin, and Jill Gallina. In addition to directing choirs, Karla is an adjudicator for the Texas Music Adjudicators Association and clinician who has conducted region choirs all over Texas and Louisiana. Also a professional musician, Karla performs regularly with her husband, Mark Anthony Cruz at weddings, corporate events, and private parties. She is also the pianist at High Pointe Baptist Church in Austin. Her bachelors degree in music education with an emphasis in piano came from Southwest Texas State University, (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, and she has done graduate work at TSU and UT-Austin. She resides in Austin with her husband and two children.

Choir Overview
The outstanding Hyde Park Choirs perform twice a year at Hyde Park in addition to other performances around Austin and contest performances each spring in Dallas. The High School Choir Director is Karla Cruz, and the Middle School will be directed by Laura Blackwood. In the spring of 2009 the Middle School boys brought home the top award for ALL choirs in the competition (including all middle and high school choirs competing), and all of the Hyde Park choirs brought home top awards. This year many of the songs in the competition were accompanied by Hyde Park High School students.
DANCE
Stacy Davis
Stacy Davis has been directing the high school varsity dance team and the middle school dance team at Hyde Park Baptist School for 3 years and is currently the High School Dance Team Director. Stacy attended Mississippi State University where she received a bachelor’s degree in education and was one of the founding members of the dance team at MSU where she acted as the director and captain. In addition to directing the Prancers, she is a member of the Women’s Symphony League of Austin and a member of Hospice Austin. She resides in Austin with husband Kevin and her two boys, Todd and Brooks.

Dance Overview
Prancers is an award winning dance team for high school age girls who are expected to boost school spirit in every event in which they participate. They perform at the half-time of all football games and all pep-rallies as well as other HP sponsored events. They have won national, regional and state awards at various competitions and performed on a Carnival Cruise Lines ship last year. The Prancers end their 10-month season with their Spring Show, which is a culmination of all their hard work during the year put into one show. This special event sells out every year!
THEATER
Lynn Kent
Lynn Kent has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama from Southwestern University in Georgetown. She has been teaching at Hyde Park since the high school opened in 1980. She has been directing plays and musicals at HP since that time. She has directed such diverse plays as Barefoot in the Park, Arsenic and Old Lace, Up the Down Staircase, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, The Mousetrap, etc. She has directed many musicals including Music Man, Sound of Music, Oklahoma!, Hello, Dolly!, Brigadoon, Fiddler on the Roof, Bye Bye Birdie, and, most recently, Beauty and the Beast. She has enjoyed teaching whole families as well as children of former students.

Every year HPBS produces a Fall Play and a Spring Musical under the leadership of Lynn Kent. These productions are don't-miss entertainment. Past plays/musicals have included Fiddler on the Roof, Bye Bye Birdie, Annie, and Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

Carrie Moore
Carrie Moore is a Mississippi College graduate. She was inspired to pursue a career in Art Education because she enjoys helping students discover and explore their artistic talents. Miss Moore has been an Art Educator for four years and has also coached middle school cheerleading. At Hyde Park, Miss Moore is teaching Middle School and High School Art as well as coaching the Middle School Pacesetters Dance Team. "I am proud to be joining a school with a known Christ-centered reputation built on integrity and that has a focus on academic achievement," states Miss Moore. cmoore@hpbs.org

The high school has recently started a Friends of Fine Arts booster organization to help the high school with volunteer and fundraising support. We have a brochure available for more information, or you can follow a direct link if you are ready to volunteer, if you are ready to make a monetary donation, or if you would like to make an in-kind donation or would like your financial contribution used in a specific way, here is a list of current needs. We hope that this model will expand to generate support for the Middle School and Elementary school in the future.
